ANOTHER MILESTONE TOWARDS MASS PRODUCTION

Milan and Turin’s residents were astonished last week to see City Transformer vehicles driving through their cities. They have been used to seeing tiny cars in their cities, but for the first time, they encountered a car that changes width while driving, expands when accelerating, and shrinks when parking or in traffic jams.

With Israeli creativity and German engineering, Transformer recently added an “Italian flavor.”  Our signing with the Italian car manufacturer CECOMP has enabled us to begin pre-production engineering as we prepare for full serial production, which will begin in early 2025.

Transforming urban mobility

The CT-1 is an all-electric two-seat, four-wheel, microcar that features proprietary shape-shifting technology that transforms its chassis in real-time and on the road to outsmart traffic and fit into tight urban spaces. As a result, the CT-1 has been heralded as a mobility game-changer for urban living, helping to transform the city landscape into a cleaner, greener, and quieter space while operating seamlessly with high-tech and optimized transport solutions.

The CT-1’s underpinnings are based on the City Transformer’s in-house developed and highly advanced modular skateboard architecture that ensures the foldable microcar is a perfect fit for inner city life, where being behind the wheel of a vehicle is often a stressful, time-consuming, expensive and arduous experience.

With its revolutionary active width adjustment patented technology – the CT-1 can ‘fold’ from its 1.4-meter width to an ultra-compact one-meter measurement on the road in real-time while driving – the all-electric microcar delivers a true mobility breakthrough in overcoming congestion, parking problems, pollution and electric vehicle running costs.

The advanced architecture also ensures the CT-1 is an engaging drive that is fun and full of character.

Weighing just 590kg – including the battery pack which is 80% smaller in mass compared with most other standard electric vehicle (EV) batteries on the market today – the CT-1 offers an outstanding 180km real-world zero-emissions driving range. The time it takes to do a weekly shop for the family – 30 minutes – is also the impressively short turnaround the CT-1 needs to recharge its batteries from 10% to 80%.

At a full 1.4-meter width, the CT-1 has a top speed of 90km/h; when it’s at a one-meter width, the speed is capped at 45km/h. Tests have shown that the all-electric microcar is much safer than scooters and e-bikes.

Studies have also shown that thanks to its innovative changing dimensions and overall compact package, CT-1 drivers are 10 times more likely to find parking spots. They also benefit from greatly reduced time having to be spent behind the steering wheel and far cheaper everyday EV running costs. In fact, the CT-1 is twice as efficient as other typical EVs on the market today.

The CT-1 is scheduled to enter series production in 2024. City Transformer is offering individuals the chance to be early adopters of disruptive EV technology by pre-ordering the CT-1. The ‘future vehicle of urban mobility can now be pre-ordered for a refundable €150 via www.citytransformer.com.

CITY TRANSFORMER AND THE SHAPE-SHIFTING ALL-ELECTRIC CT-1 MAKE MONDIAL DE L’AUTO DEBUT

  • Paris is transformed as City Transformer and the CT-1 showcases a new era of clean, intelligent, and sustainable urban mobility
  • Pioneering CT-1 – the world’s first all-electric microcar that alters its wheelbase to outsmart traffic – makes its Mondial de l’Auto debut
  • The EV tech start-up enforces its position at the vanguard of mobility through its #FreeYourCity campaign which aims to liberate urban areas of large polluting vehicles
  • City Transformer and the revolutionary CT-1 shape shifter located on stand 650 in Hall 6 at Mondial de l’Auto 2022
  • City Transformer press conference to take place at 16:20 CET

17 October 2022 / Paris  – The pioneering shape-shifting all-electric CT-1 from City Transformer represents the next chapter in sustainable and intelligent urban mobility.

Designed to meet the needs of the urban population with Paris being a prime mega city example, the CT-1 is a two-seat, four-wheeled, all-electric intelligent microcar.

With an advanced all-electric powertrain and an intelligent wheelbase that can transform its size on the road in real-time, the CT-1 uniquely allows commuters the opportunity to overcome the debilitating issues associated with congested inner-city life. This includes dramatically minimizing congestion, reducing harmful pollutants, lessening noise pollution, and transforming parking availability across urban areas. The CT-1 represents a new era in mobility without sacrificing key core attributes such as safety, comfort, and the fun-to-drive factor.

Udi Meridor, City Transformer COO, said: “Paris is one of the world’s great metropolises. Like so many other cities around the world, Paris continues to evolve as a fantastic space that people call home. However, in recent years it’s been easy to lose sight of the fact that urban areas have been created for people first and people foremost.

“For example, the main arteries that are supposed to keep Paris moving are gridlocked. The roads and avenues closer to the city center suffer from chronic congestion and resulting pollution. Most of this traffic chaos is the result of larger vehicles being on the road with just one single occupant inside the cabin. It’s time we re-think mobility. It’s time we free your city!

“The CT-1 is a sophisticated next-generation mobility solution for people living in congested urban areas such as Paris. The CT-1 is far easier to maintain on a day-to-day basis compared to conventional automobiles and represents a far safer solution compared to two-wheel applications.

“There is no doubt that congestion is an overriding issue for megacities across the world. And this issue is getting more acute. Loss of time, loss of productivity, health problems, environmental damage – the list of negative effects of inner-city traffic chaos is overwhelming. But these challenges have helped to inspire the City Transformer team to develop a unique mobility solution specifically for the urban environment that makes daily transport leaner, cleaner, and far more efficient.”

City Transformer and the revolutionary CT-1 shape-shifter are located on Stand 650 in Hall 6 at Mondial de l’Auto 2022.

CT-1 – the shape-shifter transforms Paris

The CT-1 is the world’s first all-electric mobility solution that can intelligently adapt its dimensions and handling to the individual needs of the driver and the driving environment.

Like City Transformer, the pioneering CT-1 is making its Mondial de l’Auto debut.

The compact two-seater has been designed so that it can reduce its track width from 1.4 meters to one meter to allow it to maneuver into the smallest parking spaces across the urban environment. This unique wheelbase transformation also takes place on the road in real-time to outsmart traffic and congestion flow.

The CT-1’s underpinnings are based on City Transformer’s in-house developed and highly advanced modular skateboard architecture that ensures the foldable microcar is a perfect fit for inner city life, where being behind the wheel of a vehicle is often a stressful, time-consuming, expensive, and arduous experience.

Studies have shown that thanks to its innovative changing dimensions and overall compact package, CT-1 drivers will be 10 times more likely to find parking spots in urban areas. The optimal urban dimensions of the CT-1 will also ensure drivers spend less time behind the steering wheel and benefit from far cheaper everyday EV running costs.

The advanced architecture also ensures the CT-1 is an engaging drive that is fun and full of character.

Weighing just 590kg – including the battery pack which is 80% smaller in mass compared with most other standard EV batteries on the market today – the CT-1 offers an outstanding 180km real-world zero-emissions driving range.

The time it takes to do weekly shopping for the family – less than an hour – is also the impressively short turnaround the CT-1 needs to recharge its batteries from 10% to 80%.

When at 1.4 meters in width (in performance mode), the CT-1 has a top speed of 90km/h; when at a one-meter width (in city mode), the speed is capped at 45km/h. The CT-1 measures 2,500mm in length and has an optimized wheelbase of 1,800mm.

Tests have shown that the all-electric microcar is much safer than scooters and e-bikes. As such, the CT-1 combines the advantages of a motorcycle with those of a car to create a unique overall mobility solution, without the inherent design-related disadvantages of more traditional polluting vehicles that currently make up the urban mobility landscape.

Adapting to Parisian life

With the CT-1 development program entering the crucial final prototype test and assessment stages, the final specifications of the innovative microcar are yet to be confirmed.

However, as part of its original design objective, City Transformer’s engineering team will ensure the CT-1 has a hugely reduced number of parts, components, and subsystems compared with conventional vehicles. In terms of a direct comparison with an internal combustion vehicle (ICE) and an electric vehicle (EV), the CT-1 cuts the number of parts needed from around 25,000 (ICE) and 8,000 (EV) to just 1,500 (CT-1).

This makes the CT-1 incredibly reliable, durable, and easy to live with for city dwellers and workers alike. It also dramatically reduces the need for maintenance and aftercare.

Further increasing its adaptability for cities such as Paris, the CT-1 has been carefully developed to enable shared use. It, therefore, will come as standard with intelligent sharing, fleet management, usage optimization, and personalization functions that are accessible via an intuitive digital interface.

Designed to be activated via mobile apps, the CT-1 can be personalized and customized by customers via City Transformers’ own cloud-based sharing and management services, as well as being integrated into an existing fleet management infrastructure.

The CT-1 is scheduled to enter series production in 2024.

CITY TRANSFORMER, THE SHAPE-SHIFTING MINI MOBILITY START-UP TARGETS 2025 SERIAL PRODUCTION

City Transformer, the shape-shifting mini mobility start-up targets 2025 serial production with a “ready to share” solution.

  • City Transformer’s unique shape-shifting vehicle combines congestion-busting maneuverability with safety and premium comfort for the ultimate urban mobility solution
  • Successful phase one exceeded pre-order and investment targets
  • Partnerships secured with established industry leaders, Bosch Software, SDL and CECOMP
  • The second phase includes ‘ready to share’ technology integration and final preparations for serial production in early 2025

10 May 2023 – City Transformer, an EV tech disruptor from Israel, has entered the next phase of its roadmap to full commercialization, having registered more than 2,000 pre-orders, secured €20m of Series A investment, and established partnerships with global industry leaders, Bosch Software, CECOMP, and Stockholm Design Lab (SDL).

Phase two will see the marque begin series production feasibility testing of its unique shape-shifting serial model CT-2 in Turin, Italy, with experienced European automotive manufacturing specialist, CECOMP.

City Transformer’s collaboration with world-renowned Bosch Sofware is the first step towards next-generation in-car connectivity user experiences and will enable the automaker to become the first to offer ‘ready to share’ hardware and software straight off the production line. And to mark the huge strides it has made, its work with SDL sees a smart new brand identity for the company.

Production

The CT-2 will be the first production model for City Transformer. With an innovative shape-shifting chassis, the mini car was conceived to dramatically reduce congestion and transform the freedom of mobility in cities.

Combining the agility of a motorcycle with the safety, performance, and comfort of a car, the CT-2 is 1.4m wide in Performance mode, contracting to just 1.0m wide in City mode, allowing it to pass through traffic freely. CT-2 drivers are also ten times more likely to find a parking space as the vehicle’s 2.5m length and narrow width enable parking perpendicular to the curb. Four CT-2s are able to fit into one standard parking space, providing an attractive solution for citizens in cities where demand for parking exceeds capacity, especially where administrations are currently removing on-street parking.

City Transformer recently selected Italian car manufacturer CECOMP to lead the pre-production engineering process in preparation for full serial production, which is due to start in early 2025. Pre-production engineering will include the immediate production of a mule vehicle at CECOMP’s Turin facility. CECOMP, founded in 1978, has been at the forefront of EV development and production for more than ten years. The Italian company has five production sites across Europe, and counts Renault, Volkswagen, Alpine, Aston Martin, McLaren, and Microlino in its portfolio of clients.

Future mobility solution

The CT-2’s unique shape-shifting chassis will help to solve current congestion problems, which at present see drivers spending up to 156 hours a year stuck in traffic. The global push towards electrification will improve the quality of life for the 55% of people who live in densely populated cities. However, replacing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles with electric vehicles (EV) will not solely resolve the issue of congestion. City Transformer aims to be a leading part of the movement to change the way we move within urban areas, demonstrated by its commitment to be the world’s first ‘ready to share from production’ automaker.

The integration of the current demo system of Bosch Software’s connectivity solution will help City Transformer to become the world’s first automaker to provide ‘ready to share’ vehicles directly from the production line and will enable any CT-2 to be immediately and seamlessly personalized to any user, anywhere in the world, via a specialist smartphone app. CT-Connect will enable any service provider to become a shared fleet owner and offer a premium urban mobility solution to its customers, while a white-labeled version of the app will also allow for co-branding.

Updated vision

As part of the next phase of development, City Transformer has recently carried out its own rebranding exercise, in partnership with renowned branding consultants, SDL, who have previously supported market positioning efforts for Polestar, Adidas, and Coca-Cola. As well as a redesign of City Transformer’s existing logo, SDL supported the brand to reshape the future of urban mobility, both through vehicle design and its customer proposition.

Asaf Formoza, CEO and Co-Founder of City Transformer said: “Achieving our phase one ambition and entering the next stage of development with experienced partners is a very important validation of our approach. We enter the next stage of our roadmap supported by CECOMP, Bosch, and SDL to continue our pursuit of a new era for urban mobility. We see a smarter approach in which cities are for people, not cars. This must come without compromise, and quality engineering, production, and brand positioning are crucial to the CT-2’s mission in reshaping urban mobility.”

City Transformer has so far exceeded 1,000 private pre-orders across Europe and has agreed to provide a further 1,000 vehicles to the Israeli rescue organization United Hatzalah, for immediate response to emergency medical emergencies in urban areas.

Europe remains a key regional focus for CT-2 sales, with aftersales support to be available across key markets in western, central, and northern Europe prior to first customer deliveries.

The CT-2 is currently available to pre-order for 16,000 EURO with a refundable deposit of €150 via www.citytransformer.com

MICROCARS COALITION FORMALLY LAUNCHES WITH SIX FOUNDING MEMBERS AND SETS CATEGORY…

MICROCARS COALITION FORMALLY LAUNCHES WITH SIX FOUNDING MEMBERS AND SETS CATEGORY STRATEGY AT FIRST ASSEMBLY.

5 September 2023 – The Microcars Coalition, announced in June in Amsterdam, has formally launched with six European companies as founding members. The Coalition’s first assembly at IAA 2023 Munich saw a strategy set for category growth as the leading alternative to private urban and rural sustainable mobility.

Ten C-level executives and company founders, representing the founding members of the Microcars Coalition, gathered in Munich during the IAA 2023 Conference, to discuss ways to unify efforts and maximize strengths, in order to reinforce the growth of electric fast microcars as the leading alternative to cars in cities.

The current members of the coalition are Ark Motors (UK), Circle Mobility (FR), City Transformer (IL), Kate (FR), Luvly (SE) and Microlino (CH). More companies are expected to join soon.

The coalition believes that encouraging the microcars segment and strengthening its attractiveness will help policymakers return cities to people and turn them to be more sustainable, livable, and fun places to live. Additionally, recognizing the increasing demand for sustainable mobility solutions in rural areas, where shared mobility options are often scarce, the coalition is dedicated to promoting and educating on this topic.

Promoting Sustainable and Livable Cities through Microcars

The coalition is planning to strengthen the awareness of microcars and their advantages in cities and rural areas, ensuring that taxation and subsidy policies are deployed to encourage people to switch from full-size cars to microcars, and working with city leaders to design distinguished exemptions and benefits for microcars in urban traffic and in parking areas.

The coalition will focus its efforts on quadricycles that are classified as L7e, which is the EU category for four-wheeled fast microcars. These are allowed to drive on any type of road, like all full-size cars.

Advantages of Microcars

The L7e microcars are the best solution to many urban challenges. Their large-scale deployment in cities will lead to less pollution, less urban congestion, more energy-efficient transportation, more safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and above all, more public space for green areas, sidewalks, and all kinds of urban community life (today approximately 50% of urban public space is devoted for roads and parking).

Full-size cars (1-3 tons) continue to consume huge amounts of public space and swallow more and more urban areas for highways, lanes, and parking, while approximately 80% of them are carrying only a single person. Their environmental footprint, whether electric or not, is much higher than the footprint of an electric L7e microcar.

City leaders around the world are already pushing to reorient urban areas away from cars. Some are advancing plans to remove all types of vehicles from cities and push people to lean only on mass transportation and micro-mobility two-wheel vehicles. However, studies show that approximately a third of daily commuters are not willing to compromise their safety, comfort, flexibility, and privacy.

In September 2022 the McKinsey Center for Future Mobility designated microcars as the missing link between full-size cars and the current alternatives. McKinsey conducted large-scale research that measured the potential acceptance of microcars and determined that microcars “might be the next big thing in urban mobility”. McKinsey estimated the Total Addressable Market of this category in Europe, North America, and China can reach the value of $340BN by 2030.

About the Microcars Coalition

Founded in 2023 with its initial introduction in Amsterdam, the Microcars Coalition is a collaborative alliance of leading European companies dedicated to revolutionizing urban transportation. Comprising pioneering members, the coalition is at the forefront of advocating for sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly urban mobility solutions. With a strategic focus on L7e quadricycles, the coalition aims to address urban challenges by promoting the benefits of microcars over traditional vehicles. Through partnerships, policy advocacy, and public awareness initiatives, the Microcars Coalition is committed to transforming cities into sustainable, vibrant, and community-centric habitats.

“We are going to revolutionize the future of urban mobility and reclaim cities back to people”, announced the coalition members at the Munich meeting.

MICROCARS COALITION REVOLUTIONIZES URBAN MOBILITY AND CHALLENGES BIG CARS DOMINANCE

A group of European L7e microcar makers is initiating a transformative revolution by forming a unified force, to set an alternative to full-size cars.

9 June 2023 – The coalition believes that encouraging the microcars segment and strengthening its attractiveness, will help policymakers restore cities back to people and turn them to be more sustainable, livable, and fun places to live.

The founding companies of the coalition include Microlino, City Transformer, and Circle Mobility. Many others are expected to join soon.

The coalition efforts will focus on strengthening the awareness of microcars and their advantages in cities, ensuring that taxation and subsidy policies are deployed to encourage people to switch from full-size cars to microcars, and working with city leaders to design distinguished exemptions and benefits for microcars in urban traffic and in parking areas.

L7e (heavy quadricycle) is the EU category for four-wheeled fast microcars that are allowed to drive on any type of road, like all full-size cars. This category shouldn’t be confused with L6e vehicles (light quadricycle) which are usually cheap and slow (limited to 45km/h) and are restricted to driving in limited areas. L6e vehicles are used mainly to support the mobility of elderly people or teenagers who don’t have a driving license at all.

The L7e microcars, on the other hand, are an incredible solution to many societal problems. Their deployment will mean less pollution, less urban congestion, more energy-efficient transportation, more safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and above all, more public space for green areas, sidewalks, and all kinds of urban community life (today approximately 50% of urban public space is devoted for roads and parking).

Full-size cars (1-2 tons), whether IC or EV generated, continue to consume vast amounts of public space and swallow more and more urban areas for highways, lanes, and parking, while approximately 80% of them are carrying only a single person. Their environmental footprint (even EVs) is much higher than the footprint of an electric L7e microcar.

City leaders around the world are already pushing to reorient urban areas away from cars. Some are advancing plans to remove all types of vehicles from cities and push people to lean only on mass transportation and micro-mobility two-wheel tools (mainly bikes). However, studies that were conducted in Copenhagen and elsewhere show that approximately a third of daily commuters are not willing to compromise their safety, comfort, flexibility, and privacy.

In September 2022 the McKinsey Center for Future Mobility published: “Mini mobility might be the next big thing in urban mobility” and argued that “because of their smaller size, mini-mobility (this is how they define the microcars category) vehicles are less expensive than standard EVs, consume less space, and have more parking options”. The global consultancy firm emphasizes that mini-mobility vehicles increase safety as they usually travel more slowly and are more visible than their larger counterparts, as well as requiring fewer resources, with less energy needed during production and operation.

When compared to two-wheeled micro-mobility options McKinsey stated that “mini-mobility vehicles offer greater convenience and comfort, including the ability to sit and better protection from the weather. Further, they offer extended storage space and a capacity of two passengers”.

Three representatives of the coalition founding companies attended a round table together at the Micromobility Europe Conference in Amsterdam: Oliver Ouboter, co-founder and COO of Microlino, Alain Di Duca, Founder and VP of Business Development of Circle Mobility, and Dr. Anat Bonshtien, VP Business Development of City Transformer.

“We are going to revolutionize the future of urban mobility and reclaim cities for people, not for 2-ton cars”, said the three.

SHAPE-SHIFTING VEHICLE CITY TRANSFORMER WINS PRESTIGIOUS GERMAN DESIGN AWARD

  • Electric mobility start-up’s first model, the two-seater CT-1, has secured a 2023 ‘Gold’ German Design Award for passenger vehicle product design
  • CT-1 features a unique shape-shifting chassis, transforming between 1m to 1.4m wide while in motion to help it thread through traffic or maximize stability
  • CT-1 has the smallest environmental and physical footprint possible for any truly practical urban vehicle
  • Launch plan safeguarded by an international investment of more than $20m, plus strategic partnerships with Bosch and SEGULA
  • Production will start Q4 2024 in Europe, with pre-orders now open at a discounted price of €12,500

15 December 2022 – City Transformer, a pioneering Israeli electric mobility start-up, has been recognized in the prestigious 2023 German Design Awards.

The marque’s first production model, the CT-1, has been awarded ‘Gold’ for its excellent and outstanding design in the category of passenger vehicles, with jurors highlighting its revolutionary shape-shifting chassis. The CT-1 was previously recognized by the renowned German Design Council earlier this year when it was also awarded ‘Gold’ in the 2022 German Innovation Awards.

The CT-1 is a mini-mobility vehicle that provides the maneuverability and easy parking of a motorcycle, coupled with the safety, comfort, and performance of a car. The two-seater all-electric microcar can transform while in motion – from 1.4m wide where it is capable of 90km/h on open roads, to just 1m wide to allow it to maneuver through heavy traffic and park easily in smaller spaces. Compared to an average, full-sized electric vehicle, the CT-1 is twice as energy efficient, 75% smaller in weight and footprint, and saves 80% in battery weight.

The German Design Award jury described the CT-1 as: “a role model for sustainability” and “the perfect solution in urban traffic.” They also praised its compact size, its extraordinary ability to expand the width of its axles, its pleasantly spacious cockpit, and its state-of-the-art technical functions.

Since its concept creation in 2017, City Transformer has raised more than $20m in investment from individuals and organizations in Israel, Singapore, Canada, and the USA, with an additional $100m expected through 2023.

The latest round enabled City Transformer to build two advanced seventh-generation homologation prototypes, securing full approval to drive on European roads and leading to the introduction of the CT-1 production model in August 2021.

Dr. Asaf Formoza, co-founder and CEO of City Transformer, said: “We are thrilled to receive this honor from the German Design Council. This award recognizes that the CT-1 has been beautifully designed in all aspects – technologically, environmentally, aesthetically, and experientially. Our serial production vehicle will take this design one step further, giving our customers something to look forward to. I would like to thank Mr. Lutz Dietzold, the CEO of the German Design Council, and all jury members.”

Earlier this year, City Transformer selected SEGULA Technologies France as its leading engineering development partner across all aspects of design and engineering. It also signed an agreement with Bosch Software to collaborate on the development of a seamless, user-friendly automotive connection to the digital world with the best customer experience. The company’s brand identity is currently being shaped by Stockholm Design Lab, the company responsible for the branding of Volvo, Polestar, Adidas, and Absolut.

City Transformer is due to launch a shared fleet pilot with the municipalities of Tel Aviv in Israel and Heilbronn in Germany in Q1 2024.

Serial production and market launch of the CT-1 is due to start in Q4 2024. Customers can pre-order with a fully refundable €150 deposit, with a total price of €13,000 (£10,730) before VAT and local taxes, for a limited time and in limited quantity via the company’s website. The final price will be €16,000, excluding VAT and local taxes.
